Workshop Overview:
This workshop aims to provide hands-on training in in-silico genome wide analysis of gene families in plants. Participants will learn how to use bioinformatics tools and databases to identify, annotate, and analyze gene families in plant genomes.
Workshop Content:
Day 1:
- – Introduction to gene families and their importance in plant biology
- – Overview of plant genome databases and resources (e.g. Phytozome, PlantGDB)
- – Gene family identification and annotation using bioinformatics tools (e.g. HMMER, Pfam)
Day 2:
- – Genome wide analysis of gene families using bioinformatics tools (e.g. BLAST, InterProScan)
- – Identification of conserved domains and motifs in gene families
- – Analysis of gene family evolution and phylogenetics
Day 3:
- – Functional analysis of gene families using gene ontology and pathway analysis
- – Identification of gene family members involved in specific biological processes
- – Case studies of gene family analysis in plant biology

BENEFITS OF GENOME WIDE IDENTIFICATIONS
Introduction to Genome-Wide Analysis
Data Collection and Preprocessing
Understand evolutionary relationships among different species.
Identify common ancestors and evolutionary lineages.
Detect speciation events and genetic divergence.
Physicochemical Properties of Identified Genes
Determine the cellular compartments where proteins function.
Reveal gene structure and splicing patterns.
Identify functional regions and structural conservation within proteins.
Detect conserved motif sequences that regulate gene expression.
Identify promoters and regulatory elements controlling gene expression.
Measure selective pressure on genes i.e. neutral, positive, and purifying selection.
Compare genomic linkage between species.
Map interactions between proteins in the cell.
Locate genes on chromosomes.
Gene expression levels across different conditions.
Identify differentially expressed genes and transcripts
Can use these techniques in plants, animals and bacteria.
Help in publication in highly impact factor journals.
