What is MicroRNA?

MicroRNA (miRNA) is a class of small, non-coding RNA molecules found in  animals, plants and viruses. They play an important role in regulating gene expression, making them pivotal for numerous biological processes. Typically 21-25 nucleotides long, miRNAs bind to messenger RNA (mRNA) and inhibit its translation into proteins, thus influencing cellular function.

The Role of MicroRNA in Gene Regulation

MicroRNAs are significantly involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. They can modulate various processes such as development, differentiation, and apoptosis. By binding to specific target mRNAs, miRNAs can either promote their degradation or prevent their translation, effectively fine-tuning the protein output within the cell.

MicroRNA and Disease

The dysregulation of microRNAs has been implicated in many diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disorders, and neurological diseases. Understanding the specific roles of different miRNAs in these conditions may lead to innovative therapeutic strategies. Research is focused on harnessing microRNAs for diagnostic purposes and developing miRNA-based therapies to combat various ailments.
